Tell A Story Only You Can Tell. But Don't Do It Alone.

We’re thrilled to announce our HerStories Writers membership…. for women in the messy middle of life who write.

Does this sound like you?

(These are quotes from writers before they took one of our workshops.)

“I feel uninspired and that what I have to say isn’t much different than what so many other people are writing about now.”

“I struggle with focus. Focus focus focus. I have none. I am feeling like anything I write is noise, and we don’t need more noise, so I’m struggling to find purpose, too.”

“I don’t have have a scheduled time to write, a routine. My struggles are doing it. Sitting down and doing it….and keeping a daily writing habit.”

“I struggle with motivation. I’m very blah with the dumpster fire that the world is right now.”

You're not alone

We're all feeling this way.

We hear you. And we understand.

When we talk to our community, the same challenges come up again and again: lack of focus, too many distractions, so much anxiety, no motivation, lack of accountability.

None of this — our new reality — is normal. Not for us, as midlife women, already in the “messy middle” of our lives. Not for our friends, families, and communities. We’re all kind of making it up as we go along.

There’s no playbook for what’s going on in our lives right now.

That’s why it makes sense that we need new support systems and new ways of motivating ourselves and of taking our writing to the next level.

“The HerStories #iamwriting workshop got me to write after a long period of procrastination, but more importantly, it impelled me to re-engage the whole practice of writing. I was inspired to sit down and think about my writing, what I want to write, what I need to write, and how I should go about it. It gave me the gentle push I was looking for. Stephanie and Jessica honour every woman’s personal pathway to discovering what works for her. Even in normal times, it’s a rare opportunity for a writer to meet with others to share ups and downs of the writing process. I look forward to continuing and to exploring my writing voice while hearing and reading others.’”

“This workshop gave me the structure and companionship to step back into writing and to value what I write. It also gave me the opportunity to enjoy many other pieces of writing from women similar to me. It was a marvellous adventure with fellow travellers, where writing has otherwise felt too solitary in this physically-distanced time, and I am so grateful.”

“This workshop gave me a purpose and a direction I desperately needed in order to return to my writing. I had blamed the pandemic and my overwhelming feelings for not writing in the last year. Turns out, I wasn’t writing because I did not know where I wanted my writing to go…..I found the course to be manageable and fluid enough that I could get it in within my crazy, hectic schedule. I found Stephanie and Jessica to be, once again, knowledgeable, encouraging, and genuine. Loved this.”

Meet the co-founders

We're Jessica and Stephanie.

Jessica Smock and Stephanie Sprenger are the co-founders and co-editors of the HerStories Project, a publishing and writing community for midlife women.

We met online as “blogging friends” and then founded the HerStories Project in 2014. We’ve published four essay collections, edit our HerStories Project website, and have taught writing to hundreds of female writers over the past six years.

It’s been our joy to work with midlife writers just like you. Our lives of juggling family and jobs and writing are much like yours. We know what it’s like, as midlife women, to want to carve out space in our lives for just ourselves. We hope that you can join us in our HerStories community!

Frequently Asked Questions

Zoom meetings will be held on Thursdays (for personal essay writers) and Fridays (for everyone) at 1 p.m. No problem at all if you can’t make them! The weekly meetings will be a mix of question and answer, discussion of lesson topics, and informal discussion. They will be recorded to watch after. You can also submit a question about the lessons or your own writing in advance for us to answer in the call.

DO NOT WORRY ABOUT THIS. It is impossible for you to “get behind.” The lessons will be delivered each weekday, but do not worry if you miss a day here or there. Or even lots of them.
