a herstories "Small Steps" writing workshop

Write with us (May 3 - 30).

Join a writing workshop for midlife women who want to tell their stories, alongside other writers who understand this stage of life.

The last year has been a year like no other. We midlife women have been stretched, pulled, exhausted, and drained.

Yet in spite of it all — or maybe because of it — we still want to tell our stories. We want to connect with our writing, maybe more than ever.

We’ve been offering our “Small Steps” writing workshops since March of last year, when most of our writers suddenly found themselves looking for something different than a traditional online writing course.

These workshops have been among the most popular we’ve ever offered, and (a year later) many of those first students are still close, still supporting each other, and writing together in our community.

Does this sound like you?

You want to start (or rebuild) a writing practice. You want to make writing a part of your everyday life. You want to explore new ideas. You want to make telling your stories a priority.

You want to be inspired and feel a sense of community with other midlife women. It’s hard to motivate when it’s just us and our notebooks or our computer screens.

You’re not sure if you’re really a writer, even if you once wrote regularly. Isn’t a writer someone who writes? What if you’ve barely written at all, or everything you do write feels inadequate?

You struggle with focus and motivation, more so than ever before.

You're not alone

We've all been feeling this way.

Our may writers circle

Imagine writing for four weeks about the topics and themes that you care about in this stage of life, alongside other midlife writers. Start writing, make progress, and celebrate your wins with us.

Here's what other Small Steps students have said about the workshop:

“The HerStories Project has created an inviting and creatively enriching online space with “Small Steps in Uncertain Times.” This extraordinary writing group allowed me to stretch and grow as a writer during the COVID-19 crisis, an incredibly challenging time for me, personally, and the world abound. Writing in the company of a diverse collection of women from all over the United States and abroad was one of the best experiences of my creative life.”

“The HerStories #iamwriting workshop got me to write after a long period of procrastination, but more importantly, it impelled me to re-engage the whole practice of writing. I was inspired to sit down and think about my writing, what I want to write, what I need to write, and how I should go about it. It gave me the gentle push I was looking for. Stephanie and Jessica honour every woman’s personal pathway to discovering what works for her. Even in normal times, it’s a rare opportunity for a writer to meet with others to share ups and downs of the writing process. I look forward to continuing and to exploring my writing voice while hearing and reading others.’”

“This workshop gave me the structure and companionship to step back into writing and to value what I write. It also gave me the opportunity to enjoy many other pieces of writing from women similar to me. It was a marvellous adventure with fellow travellers, where writing has otherwise felt too solitary in this physically-distanced time, and I am so grateful.”

Meet jessica and Stephanie.

We're your instructors and the co-founders of the HerStories Project.

Jessica Smock and Stephanie Sprenger are the co-founders and co-editors of the HerStories Project, a publishing and writing community for midlife women.

We met online as “blogging friends” and then founded the HerStories Project in 2014. We’ve published four essay collections, edit our HerStories Project website, and have taught writing to hundreds of female writers over the past six years.

It’s been our joy to work with midlife writers just like you. Our lives of juggling family and jobs and writing are much like yours. We know what it’s like, as midlife women, to want to carve out space in our lives for just ourselves. We hope that you can join us in our HerStories community!
